Solar power is free energy from the sun
Solar power is converting the suns light into electricity with solar cells. Sunlight can be converted to electricity using photovoltaics. Photovoltaics are used to power small and medium-sized applications: a calculator or watch powered by a single solar cell. Solar electricity has great potential, but in 2008 supplied less than 0.02% of the world's total energy supply. There are many competing technologies, including fourteen types of photovoltaic cells, such as thin film, monocrystalline silicon, polycrystalline silicon, and amorphous cells. It is too early to know which technology will become dominant.
